If you’ve served on a church team for any length of time—especially toward the end of a long season or year—you know the feeling. You’ve given your energy, your time, and your heart to support everyone around you. You’ve cheered on others, held things together, and kept showing up.
And then… you look inside your own tank, and it feels completely bone-dry.
If that is where you find yourself today, take a deep breath. First of all: we see you, we appreciate you, and we totally get it. Serving the Kingdom is deeply rewarding, but we are all human, and weariness is real.
The incredible news? God does some of His absolute best work when we reach the end of our own strength.
The Mystery of the Empty Jar
In 2 Kings 4, a widow comes to the prophet Elisha in total desperation. Her husband had passed away, debt collectors were knocking on the door, and she was out of options. When asked what she had left in her home, her answer was simple: "Nothing at all... except a small jar of olive oil."
Notice what God didn't ask her to do. He didn't demand that she magically produce a full warehouse of oil on her own. He simply asked her to gather empty jars and start pouring.
So she did. One jar filled up, then another, and another. As long as there was an empty vessel ready to receive, the oil kept flowing. It only stopped when there were no jars left!
We serve a God who is Creator Ex Nihilo—the God who makes incredible things out of absolute nothingness. In fact, "very little" seems to be His favourite starting material! When you feel like you have nothing left to offer, you are actually in the perfect position to witness a miracle.
Joy That Defies Circumstances
We see this same supernatural pattern in 2 Corinthians 8:1-7. Paul highlights the churches in Macedonia who were going through extreme trials and severe poverty. Yet, out of that place of struggle, an overwhelming joy welled up into incredible generosity and service. They didn't serve because they had boundless physical energy or extra resources; they served because they gave themselves first to the Lord, and His grace carried them through.
Where human capacity ends, divine grace takes over. Where we end, the miracle begins.
Spilling Jars & Finding Grace
Does this mean you should burn yourself out? Not for a second.
If you are genuinely in a season where you need to pause, rest, and let God replenish your spirit, please hear this: take the rest. There is zero guilt or shame in taking care of your soul. Rest is holy.
But if you’re standing there holding what feels like a tiny, almost-empty jar, and you hear that gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit to keep pouring—don't shrink back! You might feel tired, you might knock over a jar or spill a little along the way, but keep leaning in. Don't pull back right before the miracle happens. God delights in filling the empty places when we trust Him with our last drop.
Nothing Can Separate You From His Love
Connected to an Endless Reservoir
So where do we find the heart to keep pouring when our own jars are empty?
It comes down to knowing where our supply actually comes from. We aren't pouring from our own limited stamina; we are pouring from the endless, unshakeable reservoir of God’s love.
When you feel stretched thin, anchor your heart in Paul’s reminder from Romans 8:38-39 (MSG):
"None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us."
You can never drain the ocean of His love, and nothing you do (or don't do) can ever separate you from it. You are held, sustained, and deeply loved—first as His child, and then as His servant.
Thank you for every door you open, every child you teach, every cup of coffee you pour, and every prayer you whisper. You are making an eternal difference.
So take heart, rest when you need to, and when God prompts you—just keep pouring!
